Tonight is a sad night as we lost our kitty this afternoon. She was 17 years old and had been ill for a couple weeks, so it wasn't entirely unexpected.
After 17 years, though, they are no longer a pet, they are a member of the family. She showed up out of the desert and now she has returned. She lived a full and amazing life...I will miss her very much...
Dear Kaia, I am truly sorry for the loss of your sweet friend. She is beautiful. As you said in your phone message, you seem to be feeling better. It's hard though, having that constant presence, and then not. When my kitty died FE was her name, All black with one white spot. After she was gone I swear I would see something black out of the corner of my eye, I would look but, of course there was nothing there, but,I know she was Take Care Kaia ♥♥Joni♥♥

Rest Stop Ocotillo - 5 x 7 study in oil I had no clue when I started a 5 x 7 study of "Rest Stop Ocotillo" that a brand knew style would be born. A style that somewhat resembles icing a cake! I began the study with a palette knife and although I intended to paint the rest of it with brushes, I used the palette knife all the way to the end, even signed it with the knife! For the most part, I struggle with being too tight in my work. My paintings often land more on the realistic side and I long to have a looser, more painterly style. In this case, when I started applying paint with the palette knife, something broke loose and that more expressive side suddenly emerged. I was so surprised to see it! I felt a kind of elated freedom and a renewed inspiration! The thick, expressive paint and crazy colors that happened were so exciting! When I approached the larger canvas version of "Rest Stop Ocotillo", I did not expect to contin...
Spring is finally arriving in the desert. This year is going to be amazing after all the rain we received so far and I am about to share with you a little taste of it... So one day as I was gazing out across the valley from where we live, I noticed something strange. It appeared that the entire mountain side 30 miles away was turning orange! I knew it must be our Arizona poppies but couldn't believe what I was seeing. To see this from so far away! Time for an adventure. I grabbed Luke and we took a drive across the valley to check this out... Unfortunately, none of the photos we took did these flowers justice... It was breathtaking and blinding! The color was so intense... As far as the eye could see... Nothing but insane beauty... And then my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the...poppies. This experience is now burnt in my brain. We live on a truly magical and beautiful planet.
The year of 2016 has been nothing but amazing thus far, beginning with winning a Best in Show, a Best in Landscape, a People's Choice and a Judge's Choice award! There were many adventures and events attended as well, including the Plein Air Convention and Expo held in Tucson, Arizona in April, the Bisbee Plein Air Festival in May, also in May I held my first ever plein air workshop with 10 students, and most recently I was super excited to participate in the Maynard Dixon Camp Out as a guest artist in Mount Carmel, Utah! What an amazing experience getting to see the grounds and studio of Maynard Dixon, not to mention meeting great artists! The landscape is of course gorgeous there in southern Utah and I got a lot of painting time in as well. This path with art continues to grow and expand and I am truly grateful for all of the support and encouragement along the way. I am fortunate to have met some amazing people that have helped me realize this dream of being a full tim...
